What is MNP?

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is the ability to retain a mobile number when moving or porting from one Mobile Carrier to another. MNP occurs when the: - mobile network is different - mobile number is the same

When will MNP be available?

MNP will be available 25 September 2001.

Why is MNP important?

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) identified MNP as another way to increase competition in the Australian Mobile industry. The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) is altering their numbering plan to allow for MNP. AUSTAR is a keen supporter of competition and welcomes the introduction of MNP.

How is MNP being implemented?

Australian Communication Industry Forum (ACIF), the industry's self-governing forum: - has established small project teams - and is developing the MNP Industry Code

What does MNP include?

- Porting between GSM and GSM carriers
- Prepaid and Postpaid services

What does MNP exclude?

- Analogue Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) numbers
- MobileSat number
- Porting of Value-Added Services (VAS) that are not Mobile Service Numbers, e.g.: Voicemail is a VAS That is available to most mobile phone user. The method of recovering a voicemail differs between networks ( dial up codes etc). When you move from one carrier to another you will need to set up your voicemail & learn new codes.

What is the difference between MNP & MNT?

Mobile Number Transfer (MNT) occurs when the:

- mobile network is the same
- mobile service number is same

What products or services apply to customers who are porting?

When a customer ports to a new Carriage Service Provider, they only take their number with them and not any of their existing services. For customer's porting-in to AUSTAR mobile, they will have access to the same products and features supplied to all customers by AUSTAR Mobile.
